Tips

Many people fear public speaking. However, there are some ways to make it easier and become more effective.  Probably the most important thing is to know your material.  If you can add humor or a personal story, it can make a big difference.  Another useful technique is to rehearse over and over again.  If you have a certain time requirement, use a timer while rehearsing.  Also, it helps to know your audience and know your room.  If you are not familiar with the room, get there early so you can get familiar with it before your speech.  Although this is hard for some people, it is important to relax.  It helps to visualize yourself giving the speech.  Also, realize that your audience wants your speech to be good. They’re not rooting against you.  Try not to apologize for any problems during the speech. There is a good chance nobody even noticed it.  Another helpful technique is to stay focused on your topic, not on your audience.  If you can, try to find a way to make your speech represent you.  The more experience you are the better you will become.  Try to always be confident when speaking in front of people.  It is also important to have good nonverbal communication skills as well.  Using had gestures along with having good posture are two very important parts of nonverbal communication.  Find a natural, comfortable position to stand in and maintain it throughout your speech.  Make sure you are making good eye contact with your audience and not staring in one place or at your notes.  Try to look friendly also.  The audience will connect with you more if you appear friendly.  There are many sites and videos that have tips on how to make public speaking easier.  http://www.toastmasters.org/tips.asp .  http://web.mit.edu/urop/resources/speaking.html . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AykYRO5d_lI .  In conclusion just try to relax and be yourself.  Have fun with it.
